Beat the Heat with HVLS Fans

As the dog days of summer wind down, hopefully you were fortunate to enjoy the benefits of big industrial ceiling fans known as High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) Fans.

Varying in sizes from 8 ft to 24 ft depending on the facility space, these big fans use small motors requiring relatively little electricity compared to other cooling solutions to give a gentle breeze that provides cooling comfort over very large areas.

This comfort - called evaporative cooling - typically happens when the breeze passes over and helps dry perspiration on the skin. (If the boss comes out of his/her air conditioned office and complains all they feel is hot air ask them to stick around a bit in your environment to fully appreciate the cooling benefits before they complain too much).

You may be in a distribution-center/warehouse, or a manufacturing plant, or a hangar, or an auto repair facility or other large facility space where A/C usually isn’t the most cost effective solution to keep folks cool and comfortable and productive.

In fact, if you happen to be a dairy cow or some other form of livestock, you may also be enjoying the big fans. You no doubt eat better, produce more milk, grow faster, and are healthier.

These large industrial fans utilize the laws of physics to mix and move massive amounts of air very efficiently and effectively. So if you are in a place prone to dampness or noxious fumes you are probably experiencing a healthier and safer work environment.

You may have even discovered these big fans provide other benefits, such as the fact that they even help keep birds away (scares the bonkers out of them) and bugs can’t fly (the moving air has too much mass for them to pass).

Your fans are likely using 1 to 3 HP motors to operate but are doing the work of a couple of dozen or more smaller fans having motors with 1/3rd to 1/2 HP and more, so right there you are reducing your carbon footprint.  And with fewer fans to worry about, these big workhorses are built to last, so you have fewer maintenance headaches to deal with.

If your space has air conditioning, you have no doubt learned you can save a lot on your electric bill by setting the thermostat a few degrees higher while being just as comfortable.  And you probably needed less A/C tonnage and ducting for further savings.

So if you are one of the lucky ones to look up and see these large industrial ceiling fans then you are likely more comfortable while you are saving money on your energy costs.  You should consider yourself pretty smart.

And as you look forward to cooler seasons, you can pat yourself on the back knowing you will continue to enjoy the comfort and energy savings of your HVLS Fans.
